There are hundreds of ways to protect your valuables from criminals.  You can stash your cash in the family Bible.  Hide your jewelry in a freezer box labeled “broccoli”.  Hide paper valuables by attaching them to your pocket door systems and retracting the door into the wall.  All those represent a last-ditch attempt to hide your valuables from the criminal who’s already inside your home.

It’s better to keep him out in the first place.  Use the strongest doors and locks you can afford.  Plant prickly bushes under downstairs windows.  Don’t hide a key in an obvious place. (Under a planter or doormat is obvious.  It’s the first place a criminal looks.)

Join with neighbors to form a neighborhood watch and report suspicious strangers to the police.  You may even want to invest in a security system. (Remember what I said earlier about “obvious”?  Don’t make your alarm code 1-2-3-4.) Use security lights or place your outdoor dog’s house where he can see the door and alert you to the presence of a stranger.

Even if you just have a “regular” door, you can improve your security by making a few inexpensive changes to make it look more impregnable.  Heavy hinges and door knobs can make a door look imposing at first glance.  And studies have shown that most criminals look for the “easy” targets.  So you don’t have to turn your home into a fortress to discourage criminals.  Just don’t put out a welcome mat for them.
